Advertising is still a skill
Adword specialists pop up every day selling you dreams for next to nothing. But the reality is that advertising is not, has not been and will never be cheap and cheerful. In reality the price of advertising is directly related to the margin on a transaction. In other words, what you pay for a new client is related to your gain. That’s economics.
We’re used to saying that online advertising is only 10% effective but we don’t know which 10%. The advertising networks go to great lengths to identify which 10% is most effective. But that’s only really possible if you close the measurement loop.
The era when we could trust experts to give us the best media plan are long gone. These days, we need to deliver proof, and that’s still a hard job. It takes exceptional knowledge and the use of technology that’s cleverly connected… but you do still have to do the work. It’s not enough to ‘have a campaign running’, you need to groom it, adjust it and improve it. And that’s a skill that’s best left to people with knowledge and expertise in that field.
