Train yourself to see through a ‘user experience’ lens

User experience

One of the hardest things to do with your own site is to see it as if you were a new user. It’s difficult to imagine what it’s like to be fresh from the search engine trenches, making your way through a completely new site experience and hoping to find what you’re looking for.

User experience role-playing

The easiest way you can achieve this is to run through the user journey on a competitor’s site. Before you do, make a list. What are you looking for? What do you expect to find and how do you expect to find it? And what do you think you’ll see when you get there? Then take the journey yourself and take note of the steps you followed. While you may find that your competitor has a less-than-perfect user experience, that doesn’t mean that your site has a better one. Using your notes, you can revisit your own site (or better still, ask a friend to do it) and see how your site does by comparison.
